Eventually, the whole phone system on this planet will be run by VoIP software. There are no wires to run and you don't need lots of peripheral equipment such as exchanges, and there is no need for people to be employed to run the system. No need for receptionists (now I am in trouble!) or moving parts requiring mechanics to maintain. All that will be required is VoIP software and the hardware that interfaces the human being with the machine: the microphone and speaker.
The features provided by the VoIP software are far in advance of what any conventional phone system can give you, even Mobile cell phones. Because it is run through internet connections, VoIP software can provide such features as voice mail being shown as email messages, and you will probably shortly be able to receive your emails by voice over your phone via the VoIP software
. Although most consumers do not know enough to be influenced by possible alternatives in VoIP software, and instead choose by features offered, if you, yourself, are interested in VoIP software you could do worse than having a look at www.vovida.org This is an open source site and well worth a visit. Its novel VoIP software is a fully functional VoIP phone system which can be run on Red Hat Linux or Sun Solaris and is downloadable from the link above. It is called VOCAL, which is short for Vovida Open Communications Applications Library, and is based on a communications standard called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol): perhaps they though of it in a pub! I won’t go into how it works because I am not sure, but the professionals among you will be able to find that out from the website.
It is sufficient for me state that thanks to advances in VoIP software, you can experience VoIP technology at its best through the combination of that modern software technology and the great new hardware on the market.
VoIP phone systems have their problems due to missed packets and other data transfer mishaps, but when all is considered, it is the telephone technology of the future, and as these problems are overcome one by one, the problems current with conventional telephone systems will never improve. VoIP software technology is advancing steadily. We will all benefit from it
