VoIP Phone Service

In order to have a VoIP phone service at home, or in business, there are some basic requirements.  You will require:

A Broadband Internet Connection

Although broadband is not essential for a VoIP phone service, it is necessary if you want your calls to be made rapidly, and want to use the service while your computer is running other applications other than VoIP.

Broadband internet connections are available in just about every area of the country, and the cost is generally just the same, or cheaper, as running separate telephone and internet lines.  Contact your internet provider for more details.

A VoIP Service Provider Account

Like your existing telephone service, you will require an account with your VoIP service provider. They will provide you with the service in the same way as your landline provider provides you with your landline service and mobile provider with your mobile service.

VoIP providers should normally provide, as standard, services which are normally options on landlines. Examples are call waiting, caller ID (name and number), conference call facilities, etc, etc.  They will normally provide you with free local calls and free calls to others using the same provider.

VoIP Software  and Hardware

Your VoIP phone service will need software.  You get this from your VoIP provider.  This is necessary to convert the voice signals into a suitable form for sending over the internet.

You will also need a microphone and speakers.  Normally those provided with your computer are fine, but you can purchase upgraded microphones and speakers if you wish.  Telephone type headphones will also do, and are preferred by professional VoIP users such as call centers.

VoIP Phone

If you do not want to use your headphones, or speakers, you can purchase a VoIP telephone handset. A VoIP phone connects to an etherport on your computer or router.

VoIP Adaptor

An alternative to a dedicated microphone and speaker system is a VoIP Adaptor which allows you to use your ordinary phone for VoIP calls.  The adaptor connects your landline phone to an ethernet port in the same way as a VoIP phone does.

And that's it - you need nothing else. It's so simple that once you decide to switch to VoIP, or even try it parallel to your normal phone system, be it a landline or a mobile cell phone, you will be up and running within minutes.
