Residential VoIP
Residential VoIP involves the use of hardware such as headphones, and also the software required to allow you to use your computer to make phone calls via IP.
Simple phone handsets are also available to enable you to phone using residential VoIP phone services from anywhere in the house. In order to use residential VoIP services, you will need a broadband internet connection, whether ADSL, cable or wireless.
There are systems available which allow you to use your existing ordinary phone with VoIP to make unlimited calls anywhere for a regular monthly payment. In North America, for example, Packet8 offers unlimited calls in the USA and Canada for as little as $19.99 monthly, with a similar price for video calls for those with videophones.
Orate.co.uk provides a similar residential VoIP service in the UK while also offering a wi-fi router and wi-fi phone to allow calls to be from anywhere in range of the wireless router. I have a wireless router system and it is excellent and extremely handy when the phone rings when you are in an awkward situation!
You know what it’s like: the phone rings and you know that you can’t get to it in time, but you make the effort and it stops just as you pick it up. You know you can call back, but it doesn't matter - the phone just has to be answered.
Apart from a baby crying, it is the most compelling sound known to man. It cannot go unattended! Wi-fi VoIP residential systems avoid this.
If you use this in association with LAN or wireless mobile technology, you can use VoIP anywhere while traveling. |
